My first experience bringing a sentimental 14k gold rope chain here for repair was highly unsatisfactory, resulting in permanent damage and a significant loss of material. I received an email quote from the owner, Ed, for $20 for a simple soldering job. While this was suspiciously lower than reputable competitors, I visited in person to discuss the repair. I explicitly informed Ed that the chain was an important, sentimental gift from my mother and requested assurance that the repair would be clean and wearable. He gave his assurance. Crucially, when I asked him to weigh the chain, he refused, stating, "We don't do that as there is no point." He proceeded to take my valuable chain without recording any essential data: no weight, no length, no characteristics, and not even my full name. This fundamental lapse in professional practice is highly unusual for a jewellery shop and was a major red flag that I regret ignoring, trusting his word instead. I was initially told I could wait but was then asked to return the next day. Soon after I left, Ed called, informing me the repair would require more work and requesting another $20. I agreed, provided the quality of the work was high. I also found it odd that, upon asking to view gold chains in the display, Ed told me they had none and to come back later, a jewellery shop with no jewellery on display? When I returned, Ed repeatedly and condescendingly emphasized how "terrible" and "difficult to work on" my chain was. I was charged the original $20 fee. However, what I found was shocking: First: Subpar repair: The soldering was amateurish, leaving a visible giant blob of gold that resulted in the chain being visibly crooked at the repair point. Second: Significant loss of length: Most critically, the chain, which measured 47cm before my visit, now measures only 36cm. It is 11cm shorter and no longer fits me. When I contacted Ed to address the 11cm discrepancy, he was entirely dismissive and disrespectful, insisting I must have measured incorrectly. The verifiable fact remains: I handed him a wearable chain and received a chain that is too short and physically damaged due to the poor repair work. The owner offered no explanation for the missing material and made no genuine effort to resolve the issue. In subsequent communication, he only offered cheap extension clasps, which confirms the chain is missing length, but fails to address the value and quality of the missing gold material. He has since ignored my request for a viable solution or monetary compensation for the diminished value of my property. I remind potential customers that this business, which operates as a long-standing "family business," is not publicly associated with reputable organizations like the Canadian Jewellers Association (CJA), which upholds consumer confidence and business ethics. This experience should serve as a caution regarding the shop's procedures, the quality of their work, and their handling of customer property. Do not trust this business with your valuable pieces.
